Hiking Weekend in Oppdal 30.7. - 01.08.

I have decided to keep my posts in English from now on.

Last weekend we spent an unforgettable weekend in Oppdal, a municipality roughly 120km from Trondheim. We were about 50 - 60 people and stayed in a nice old house which is apparently also frequently used by schools for class trips. Some of us (but not me) spent the night in an old "Gamme" - a traditional Sami house with a central fireplace; I stayed in the normal house because I didn't want to smoke my borrowed sleeping bag. The food was prepared by a big mass of helping hands and was very tasty (vegetable soup, bread, salads, grilled salmon, sausages and burgers, waffles,...).

On Saturday we made a nice and long hiking trip onto the nearby mountains and I even had a swim in an ice-cold mountain river, after which I was referred to as the "Crazy Austrian Guy" for the rest of the day. About half an hour later we arrived at a persistent patch of snow where we built a (very) small snow man. For Enrique, or Mexican friend, it was the first contact with snow!
Many students weren't used to hiking and so it was only a small group in the end who did the "very long" hiking trip onto at least 5 or 6 summits. It was tough but well worth the effort!
The views were breathtaking and I couldn't stop grinning because of the beautiful nature. We crossed several marshes where I was very happy to have good hiking shoes and my raincoat was also put to the test. The weather DOES change very quickly in the Norwegian mountains.

For Sunday we were promised a surprise trip on our way home - which turned out to be a high rope course! Astonishingly I didn't have any problems despite my fear of heights. I had loads of fun zooming over the beautiful river and Erique amused us as a "flying luchador". Compliments to the people organising the Social Programme, it was a really nice weekend!
