I landed in Oslo at half past 8 in the evening and spent the first night at Hanne's.
May 17th:
The next day was the 17th of May, Norway's National Day. Sticking to the tradition, Hanne and Katrine both dressed up in their bunads (traditional Norwegian dresses) and we enjoyed a bottle of champagne to our breakfast before heading out to town. To blend in, I wore my Norwegian Marius cardigan I had just finished knitting the night before my departure.
In the city centre, Katrine's sister joined us and we watched the huge procession of hundreds of school classes and brass bands waving flags and marching along the Karl Johans Gate towards the Royal Palace. Eventually we joined the procession to wave to the Royal family and to visit Åshild, one of Hanne's friends, where we were treated with some cake, coffee and champagne.
After that we carried on to Aker Brygge, where we enjoyed an ice cream in the sun.
While Katrine left to cook some dinner for the evening, Hanne showed me the cult club Blå and we both had a beer before going to the military tattoo of the 3rd Royal Guard Company at their parade ground. Their performance was really impressive and I was stunned when one of the guardsmen suddenly whipped out an e-guitar and started shredding some cool riffs to which the other guardsmen perfomed their choreography.
In the evening we were invited to a buffet at some of Katrine's friends and we spent the rest of the day there eating and drinking in good company.
May 18th:
After a good night's sleep I spent the 18th of May together with Katrine and her sister Ingebjørg checking out the peninsula Bygdøy with its Norwegian Museum of Cultural History and the Kon-Tiki Museum and had a good look at the Oslo Opera House on the way home. Hanne came over for supper and then we all went out to have some beers in the metal bar Unholy. Guess who chose the venue. :-D
May 19th:
My birthday was great!! The three of us had breakfast together at Katrine's before we put on our hiking shoes and walked through the Nordmarka to the old and traditional restaurant Frognerseteren where the two girls treated me to a piece of the famous and delicious apple cake as well as some coffee. Apparently not only humans like the food from there, a little chaffinch was hungry and brave enough to eat some crumbs from my hand!
I spent the afternoon together with Hanne drinking beer and helping her with baking a cake. Two of her friends also came by and together we went to the birthday party of Kirsten, another one of Hanne's friends where we stayed until the end. As Kirsten mentioned that it was also my birthday, all the guests sang a norwegian brithday song for me - really sweet!
Unfortunately the time always goes by too quickly when it's most fun, and after just 2 hours of sleep I had to get up, say good bye and go to the train which would take me to Trondheim.
Once again THANK YOU Hanne and Katrine for such a lovely time in Oslo, it was really great!!
